who actually causes the ticker to rise? is it a computer program that calculates the buys/sells and creates the up-tick? or is it some guy that decides to post an increase on his master computer somewhere.

More like "computer documented". Before computers they wrote it on a chalk board at the exchange.

Obviously this made the market move much more slowly. Most investors just looked at the paper the following day to decide their course of actions. Today everyone hovers over their Ameritrade trying to time their moves.

we'll see if it last all day or peters out. right now gold seems to have popped more than silver.

Not really, as of this minute, gold has risen 1.4% and silver 1.9%.

After watching the past couple of years of bops, when PMs start up, I start looking over my shoulder because I know it's coming.
